The Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC) manages all state-owned jute mills and industries in the South Asian country. The company has agreed to enter into 20-year power purchase agreements (PPAs) to purchase power from six different project developers.

BJMC recently issued a statement saying that it will purchase 90 MW rooftop photovoltaic power capacity from 13 jute mills deployed across Bangladesh.

BJMC chairman Anis Mahmud told pv magazine: “We will purchase power from these plants under a 20-year contract.”

He noted that the project developers were selected through competitive bidding, which included six foreign bidders and their local joint venture partners.

"We have submitted their proposal to the Ministry of Electricity for evaluation and award of the contract," Mahmud added, but giving no further details.

The bidders include Chint New Energy Bangladesh subsidiary (China), Solarion CNI Creative Center (Indonesia), Copenhagen Urban Solar Park BD Consortium (Denmark), Top Points Trading (Oman), Lesso Consortium (Singapore) and BAY Trina Consortium (China).

In June 2023, the Bangladesh government took many measures to increase the share of domestic independent power producers (IPPs) in the renewable energy market. The government allows these IPPs to hold 100% of the shares in companies with renewable energy projects, eliminating the original 80% foreign investment limit.

Previously, domestic independent power producers were allowed to participate in projects through international consortiums in which they held 51% of the shares, while foreign developers were capped at 20%.
