In the first half of 2023, Italy added approximately 2.3 GW of photovoltaic system capacity, an increase of approximately 12% compared with the same period last year. As of the end of June 2023, the national cumulative installed photovoltaic capacity was approximately 27.4 GW.

Residential installations accounted for approximately 47% of new capacity in the first half of this year, with recent growth driven by commercial and industrial (C&I) and utility-scale solar projects exceeding 1 MW.

"Compared to the first quarter of this year, the grid-connected power of industrial and commercial systems and utility-scale solar projects exceeding 1MW increased by 49% and 89% respectively in the second quarter of 2023," Italia Solare recorded.

The grid connection of power plants above 10 MW, which has been stalled since July 2022, will restart in the second quarter of 2023. In particular, two 10 MW power plants in Piedmont and Puglia and a 36 MW power plant in Sardinia were added to the grid.

On the contrary, due to the expiration and suspension of the super subsidy, new installed capacity in the residential sector fell slightly from 569 MW in the first quarter to 528 MW in the second.

Regions with the highest share of total new installations include Lombardy (429 MW), Veneto (353 MW and Emilia-Romagna (235 MW).

Lombardy successfully defended its title with a cumulative installed capacity of 3.58 GW, widening the gap with Puglia, which has a grid-connected PV capacity of 3.18 GW. In the first quarter of 2023, Lombardy led the way with 429 MW of electricity connected to the grid, followed by Veneto and Emilia-Romagna with 353 MW and 235 MW respectively.
